Model method and heuristics for primary maths
Our teaching follows Pólya’s four problem-solving steps, used in the MOE framework. The figure depends on the question: a bar model, a geometric figure, a solid or a pattern.
Understand the question
Read what is given, name the quantities and identify what the question asks us to find.
Plan with a figure
Draw the relationships before calculating. Bars show quantities in a ratio; a geometric figure shows the angles, lengths or areas involved.
Do the working
Write one derived value per line. Explain why it is needed before using it in the next line. Everything already written stays on screen within the question.
Look back
Check the answer against the question and the figure. The child should be able to explain what the answer represents, including its unit.
Primary maths roots: the Mathweave mark
Our mark is three bars, two solid and one broken, which is also a comparison bar model. Our line for it is Maths, thread by thread.
