Numbers to 10 Million

Read and write numbers to 10 million, then find the value of one gap before reading a marked scale.

Your child reads and writes numbers up to 10 million in numerals and in words, keeping millions, thousands and ones in their own groups. Your child finds what each digit is worth by naming its place first. The chapter then reads number lines and measuring scales: count the equal gaps between two printed numbers, find one gap, and count on to the mark. Read the study guide →

About this chapter

Primary 5 numbers to 10 million questions read and write numbers up to 10 million in numerals and in words, and use place value to say what each digit is worth. The chapter also reads marked number lines and scales by finding the value of one gap.

Practise by question type: p5 number line and scale questions and p5 place value questions to 10 million.

The order to learn them

  1. Reading the value represented

    1.1 and 1.2

Read a digit through its place, or find the value of one equal gap before reading a marked position.

The number tells you where a question type sits in this chapter, not what your child needs to learn first. A child who has already met a type in school can practise it without working through the ones above it.

How the end-of-year papers set these questions

The chapter is checked against Primary 5 end-of-year papers.

Mathweave is modelled against top school papers. The 2025 Primary 5 end-of-year papers show the question forms and the written working; the MOE syllabus remains the first source for terms and outcomes.

These questions appear throughout the 2025 papers.

Each paper includes work from this chapter. Most questions are short checks of number words, place value or a marked position on a scale.

Every practice question is original.

The source papers guide the form and level of the practice. No school question is copied or renamed.

Everything here is modelled against top school papers. Those papers are never reproduced, and every question on this site is original.

How to set out the working clearly

These examples show Mathweave's clear, consistent layout for each method. The layout is informed by the answer keys we reviewed.

  • Write the numeral and number words in matching place-value groups Keep millions, thousands and ones in clear groups. A zero keeps its place even when it is not spoken as a separate word.
  • Show the value of a digit, not only the digit Name the place first, then write the full value represented there. A digit and its value are different answers.
  • Count the equal gaps before finding the value of one gap Subtract the two labelled values and divide by the number of equal gaps between them. Count gaps, not marks.
  • Count on from the nearer labelled value After finding one gap, count how many gaps lead to the marked position. Write that calculation before the final reading.

Questions parents ask

Is this in the Primary 5 syllabus?

Reading and writing numbers up to 10 million is an MOE Primary 5 outcome. Reading a marked scale is included because it appears in Primary 5 end-of-year papers and uses the same number sense.

Which practice is available now?

Both question types have original practice.

Are the questions from past papers?

We write the questions ourselves rather than copy them from papers. Each chapter is modelled on the types of question that top school papers set. A question may look like one your child has met before because it is the same type.

How does the practice help?

Practice uses different values for the same skill, shows the full written working and records which question types your child can complete independently.
