Patterns
Look for what repeats or what grows, then use the rule to work forwards and backwards.
Your child learns two kinds of pattern. In a growing pattern, your child builds a table of figure number against count, checks the change twice, then counts gaps to reach a far figure or to work back from a count. In a repeating pattern, your child finds the unit, divides to get whole units and a leftover, and reads the leftover from the start. Read the study guide →
About this chapter
These Primary 6 patterns questions come in two kinds: patterns that repeat, where the work is finding the repeating unit and the leftover, and figures that grow by the same amount each time, where a table finds the rule. Both build on the number patterns met in earlier years.
Practise by question type: growing pattern questions and repeating pattern questions.

Build the table, spot the change and count the gaps. Five steps run from matchstick figures to a repeating strip and a loop of beads, then worked examples and a check.
