A box measures 5 cm by 4 cm by 3 cm. It already holds 30 one-centimetre cubes. How many more one-centimetre cubes are needed to fill the box completely?

Divide the water volume by the base area to find its depth.

How Paper 1 and Paper 2 set these questions

The PSLE Maths format from 2026.

Paper 1 has 30 questions for 50 marks: 18 multiple-choice questions and 12 short-answer questions. Paper 2 has 15 questions for 50 marks: 5 short-answer questions and 10 structured or long-answer questions.

Volume appears in every paper, sometimes without a formula.

A common question uses a solid built from unit cubes and shows front, side or top views. Three- and four-mark items appear in Paper 2 and often involve water in a tank or water poured between containers.

Many higher-mark Paper 2 questions combine topics.

Close to half of Paper 2 questions combine two or more topics. A volume question may also require a unit conversion, a fraction or a ratio. Practice questions are not labelled by type, so children must choose the methods they need.

How to set out the working clearly

These examples show Mathweave's clear, consistent layout for each method. The layout is informed by the answer keys we reviewed.

  • Mathweave writes the volume rule before substitutingMathweave writes volume = length × breadth × height before substituting measurements. This is our teaching layout; reviewed keys usually begin with the numerical calculation. Use the same first line when working backwards.
  • Write the base area before finding the missing lengthMathweave names the base area on its own line, then divides the volume by that area to find the missing length. Some reviewed keys chain the divisions instead. Our two-line form keeps the intermediate quantity visible.
  • Mathweave keeps the units in the divisionMathweave writes 1700 cm³ ÷ 170 cm² = 10 cm. Cubic centimetres divided by square centimetres leave centimetres. This unit calculation confirms that the answer is a length.
  • Mathweave writes the volume conversions as one chainMathweave writes 1 litre = 1000 ml = 1000 cm³ as one chain of equals. Some reviewed keys print the full chain; others abbreviate it.

Is this the PSLE syllabus?

The question types follow the latest MOE Primary Mathematics syllabus. The syllabus defines what is taught; the papers we model against show how it is examined.

Why does the chapter teach things my child met in an earlier year?

Primary 6 adds finding missing measurements from a volume, including square roots and cube roots. Earlier volume work is also examined, so it is taught here in full.

Are the questions from past papers?

We write the questions ourselves rather than copy them from papers. Each chapter is modelled on the types of question that top school papers set. A question may look like one your child has met before because it is the same type.

What does the practice add over the films?

Practice uses different numbers for each question type, points out the common mistake when your child makes it and records which types your child can complete independently.
