A tank with a square base is 16 cm high. It contains 1.8 ℓ of water, and the water stands 8 cm deep. (a) Find the length of one side of the base. (b) How many more millilitres of water are needed to fill the tank to the brim?

Written out in full, the way it should appear on paper.

  1. conversion fact = unit relation for 1 ℓ = 1000 ml = 1000 cm³
  2. water volume in cubic centimetres = converted value of 1.8 ℓ = 1800 ml = 1800 cm³
  3. base area = 1800 ÷ 8 = 225
  4. side = √225 = 15 cm
  5. capacity = 225 × 16 = 3600
  6. more water = 3600 - 1800 = 1800

The answer is side 15 cm, 1800 ml more.

Choose the volume route

Combine cube counting and volume in one mixed question.

A solid is built from one-centimetre cubes. Its bottom layer is a full rectangle, 6 cubes by 4 cubes. Its second layer is a full rectangle, 6 cubes by 2 cubes, sitting on the back of the bottom layer. Nothing stands higher. Find the volume of the solid.
