A worked example

Tank A measures 40 cm by 20 cm and holds water 3 cm deep. All the water is poured into the empty Tank B, whose base area is one quarter of Tank A's. Then all the water in Tank B is poured into the empty Tank C, whose base area is half of Tank B's. Find the height of the water level in Tank C.

Written out in full, the way it should appear on paper.

  1. base area of A = 40 × 20 = 800
  2. volume of water = 800 × 3 = 2400
  3. base area of B = 800 ÷ 4 = 200
  4. base area of C = 200 ÷ 2 = 100
  5. water level in C = 2400 ÷ 100 = 24 cm

The answer is 24 cm.

Depth after water is drawn off

Find the remaining volume, then divide by the base area.

A rectangular tank measures 45 cm by 20 cm. The water in it is 24 cm deep. 5.4 ℓ of water is drawn off. Find the depth of the water left in the tank.
