How do you find a circle's radius or diameter from a composite figure in P6?

Watch: the area of a circle that fits exactly inside a square

Another worked example

A worked example

A quadrant is painted on a wall. The quadrant has an area of 78.5 cm². Find the diameter of the full circle that the quadrant was cut from. (Take π = 3.14.)

The working · Five lines

The step-by-step working

Written out in full, the way it should appear on paper.

  1. area = π × r × r
  2. circle = 4 × 78.5 = 314
  3. r × r = 314 ÷ 3.14 = 100
  4. r = 10
  5. diameter = 2 × 10 = 20

The answer is 20 cm.

Find the area of one cap

Use the row of touching circles to recover one cap's diameter before finding its area.

Five identical circular bottle caps lie touching in a straight row, and the row spans 35 cm from the left rim of the first cap to the right rim of the last. Find the area of one cap. (Take π = 3.14.)

cm²

Show the step-by-step solution
  1. area = π × r × r
  2. 5 diameters = 35
  3. 1 diameter = 35 ÷ 5 = 7
  4. radius = 7 ÷ 2 = 3.5
  5. area = 3.14 × 3.5 × 3.5 = 38.465

Ans: 38.465 cm²
