Another worked example

A worked example

A quadrant sign is painted on a wall. The curved edge of the quadrant measures 15.7 cm. Find the area of the quadrant face. (Take π = 3.14.)

The working · Five lines

The step-by-step working

Written out in full, the way it should appear on paper.

  1. circumference = π × d
  2. circumference = 15.7 × 4 = 62.8
  3. diameter = 62.8 ÷ 3.14 = 20
  4. radius = 20 ÷ 2 = 10
  5. area = 1/4 × 3.14 × 10 × 10 = 78.5

The answer is 78.5 cm².

Choose area or perimeter

Read the question's target before selecting the circle method.

A square card has a side of 36 cm. A semicircle of diameter 18 cm is cut away from the middle of one side, leaving a curved notch. Find the perimeter of the remaining card. (Take π = 3.14.)

cm

Show the step-by-step solution
  1. circumference = π × d
  2. three sides = 3 × 36 = 108
  3. shoulders = 36 - 18 = 18
  4. arc = 1/2 × 3.14 × 18 = 28.26
  5. perimeter = 108 + 18 + 28.26 = 154.26

Ans: 154.26 cm
