A worked example

At a stall, for every 4 curry puffs sold, 3 egg tarts are sold. Each curry puff costs $2 and each egg tart costs $3. One morning the stall collected $476 from curry puffs and egg tarts. How many egg tarts did the stall sell?

  1. 1 set = 4 curry puffs and 3 egg tarts
  2. cost of 1 set = $8 + $9 = $17
  3. number of sets = $476 ÷ $17 = 28
  4. 28 sets = 28 × 3 = 84 egg tarts

The stall sold 84 egg tarts.

Count the shampoo bottles

A factory packs bars of soap and bottles of shampoo into cartons. For every 3 bars of soap packed, 5 bottles of shampoo are packed. Each bar of soap has a mass of 120 g and each bottle of shampoo has a mass of 200 g. The cartons packed in one day held 27.2 kg of soap and shampoo altogether. How many bottles of shampoo were packed that day?

  1. 1 group = 3 bars of soap and 5 bottles of shampoo
  2. soap in 1 group = 3 × 120 = 360
  3. shampoo in 1 group = 5 × 200 = 1000
  4. mass of 1 group = 360 + 1000 = 1360
  5. total mass in grams = 27.2 × 1000 = 27200
  6. number of groups = 27200 ÷ 1360 = 20
  7. bottles of shampoo = 5 × 20 = 100
