At a stall, for every 4 curry puffs sold, 3 egg tarts are sold. Each curry puff costs 2 dollars and each egg tart costs 3 dollars. One morning the stall collected four hundred and seventy six dollars from curry puffs and egg tarts. How many egg tarts did the stall sell? Try it first. Pause if you like. Every time this stall sells, it sells the same set. 4 curry puffs. And 3 egg tarts. Ring them. That's one set, and every set is exactly the same. Write it down. Now price the set. 4 curry puffs at 2 dollars each is 8 dollars. 3 egg tarts at 3 dollars each is 9 dollars. So write the cost of one set. 8 dollars and 9 dollars. One set costs 17 dollars. And so does every other set. The stall took four hundred and seventy six dollars, one set at a time. So divide. Four hundred and seventy six divided by 17 is 28. The stall sold 28 sets. Each set holds 3 egg tarts. These 3. 28 sets of 3 is eighty four. That's how many egg tarts the stall sold. Find the set price. Divide the total by it. So the money doesn't split the way the items do. Price one set, and count how many sets the money buys.
