A worked example

Mr Lim spends 60% of his monthly salary and saves the rest. In July his salary was 25% more than it was in June. He spent $360 more in July than in June. How much did Mr Lim save in July?

  1. 100% + 25% = 125%
  2. July salary = 125% of the June salary
  3. July spending = 60% of 125% = 60/100 × 125% = 75% of the June salary
  4. 75% - 60% = 15%
  5. 15% = $360
  6. 1% = $360 ÷ 15 = $24
  7. 125% = 125 × $24 = $3000
  8. 100% - 60% = 40%
  9. 100% = $3000
  10. 1% = $3000 ÷ 100 = $30
  11. 40% = 40 × $30 = $1200

The answer is $1200.
