Follow two discounts

How Paper 1 and Paper 2 set these questions

The PSLE Maths format from 2026.

Paper 1 has 30 questions for 50 marks: 18 multiple-choice questions and 12 short-answer questions. Paper 2 has 15 questions for 50 marks: 5 short-answer questions and 10 structured or long-answer questions.

Percentage appears in both Paper 1 and Paper 2.

No paper leaves it out, and it runs at about a tenth of the marks. A Paper 1 percentage question is usually one direct step; the 3-mark items appear in Paper 2 and are usually a discount with GST added, a second change worked on the new amount, or a percentage read off a chart. More than half include a figure printed beside them, which is more than any other topic in the paper.

Many higher-mark Paper 2 questions combine topics.

Close to half of Paper 2 questions combine two or more topics, most often percentage with ratio, fractions or a chart. Practice questions are not labelled by type, so children must choose the methods they need.

How to set out the working clearly

These examples show Mathweave's clear, consistent layout for each method. The layout is informed by the answer keys we reviewed.

  • Write every method step on its own lineWrite each unit value, conversion and subtotal on its own line so the calculation can be checked.
  • Name the 100% for each stage before calculatingName the 100% separately for each stage. The original price is 100% for the discount. The discounted price becomes the new 100% for GST, and a second change uses the amount after the first change.
  • A part becomes a percentage as the part over the whole, times 100%One clear method is to write the part over the whole and multiply by 100%: 90 out of 360 becomes one quarter, times 100%, which is 25%. This method also works when the fraction is not easy to recognise.
  • Use a consistent unitary chain, connected with equals40% = 240, then 1% = 6, then 100% = 600, one line each, with the division written as a proper division sign. The chain may go through 1% or another useful percentage. Mathweave connects the lines with equals signs. Use the bar to organise the quantities, then write the calculation line by line.

Is this the PSLE syllabus?

The question types follow the latest MOE Primary Mathematics syllabus. The syllabus defines what is taught; the papers we model against show how it is examined.

Why does the chapter start with work from Primary 5?

Primary 6 adds only two percentage outcomes to the syllabus: finding the whole from a part, and finding a percentage increase or decrease. Taking a percentage of a quantity, and working a discount with GST, are Primary 5 knowledge needed for the later word problems, so the chapter teaches them first.

Are the questions from past papers?

We write the questions ourselves rather than copy them from papers. Each chapter is modelled on the types of question that top school papers set. A question may look like one your child has met before because it is the same type.

What does the practice add over the films?

Practice uses different numbers for each question type, points out the common mistake when your child makes it and records which types your child can complete independently.
