A worked example

A rectangular block measures 72 cm by 30 cm by 18 cm. From the top of each short end, a slab measuring 12 cm by 30 cm by 6 cm is trimmed off, leaving a lower ledge at each end. Find the volume of the block that is left.

Written out in full, the way it should appear on paper.

  1. whole block = 72 × 30 × 18 = 38880
  2. one slab = 12 × 30 × 6 = 2160
  3. both slabs = 2160 × 2 = 4320
  4. block left = 38880 - 4320 = 34560

The answer is 34560 cm³.

Two boxes joined together

Find each cuboid's volume, then add the parts.

A solid is made from two rectangular boxes joined together, as shown. The lower box measures 14 cm by 10 cm and is 6 cm high. The upper box measures 14 cm by 5 cm and is 4 cm high, standing on the right-hand half of the lower box's top face. Find the volume of the solid.
