The figure below is made of 7 squares lettered A to G. If one square is removed, the rest folds into a cube. Which square must be removed?

Written out in full, the way it should appear on paper.

  1. a cube has 6 faces, so a net of a cube has 6 squares
  2. squares drawn = 7, so exactly 1 square is extra
  3. B, C, D, E and F make a row of 5, and a row of 5 wrapped round a cube brings the 5th square back onto the 1st
  4. so the row must come down to 4, and the extra square is B or F
  5. removing B would leave A joined to nothing, so the figure would fall into two pieces
  6. removing F leaves a row of 4 with A above one end and G below the middle, on opposite sides, so the rest folds into a cube

The answer is Square F.

Count the faces of a pyramid

Count the square base and the triangular faces.

The figure below shows a pyramid. Its bottom face is a square, and all its other faces are triangles that meet at one point at the top. How many faces does the pyramid have altogether?

  2. one triangle stands on each side, so triangular faces = 4
  3. faces = 4 + 1 = 5
