Priya and Samuel share 45 beads, in the ratio 2 to 3. How many beads does Samuel get? Time to draw. This blue box is 1 unit. Priya's beads first. She gets 2 units, side by side. And Samuel gets 3 units. Every unit, exactly the same size. A row of units, joined up like this, is called a bar. Now find the whole. Put the two bars end to end. Priya's 2 units, then Samuel's 3. This whole row, all together, is the 45 beads. The 45 beads fill every unit in this row. So we count every unit. 1, 2. 3, 4, 5. 2 units and 3 units. That's 5 units in all. All 5 units share the 45 beads. Not just Samuel's 3. Now cut the whole. Write it down. 5 units make 45. So 1 unit is 45 shared equally among 5. That's 9. 9 beads in this unit. And 9 beads in every other unit too. All of them the same. Now Samuel's beads. Samuel has 3 units. And every unit is 9 beads. 3 times 9 is 27. Samuel gets 27 beads.
Your turn. Priya has 2 units, and every unit is 9 beads. How many beads does Priya get? Count her units. Priya has 2 units of 9. 2 times 9 is 18. Priya gets 18 beads. Look at the whole row one more time. 5 units, and the same 9 beads in every one. Whenever you share in a ratio, count every unit first. Here the 45 beads were shared by all 5 units, not just Samuel's 3.
