Another worked example

A worked example

A tailor has 9 strips of ribbon, each 5/6 m long. She joins all of them end to end into one long ribbon, and then cuts the long ribbon into pieces that are each 5/8 m long. How many whole pieces can she cut?

The working · Four lines

The step-by-step working

Written out in full, the way it should appear on paper.

  1. the joined ribbon = 9 × 5/6 = 15/2 m
  2. joined ribbon in mixed-number form = 15/2 m = 7 1/2 m
  3. dividing by 5/8 is the same as multiplying by 8/5
  4. 15/2 ÷ 5/8 = 15/2 × 8/5 = 12 pieces

The answer is 12 pieces.

Cut whole pieces

Keep the two rolls separate while you count whole pieces.

There are 2 rolls of tape, each 7/8 m long. Each roll is cut into pieces that are 1/4 m long. How many whole 1/4 m pieces can be cut in all?

pieces

Show the step-by-step solution
  1. one roll = 7/8 m
  2. one piece = 1/4 m
  3. each roll: 7/8 ÷ 1/4 = 7/8 × 4 = 7/2
  4. 7/2 = 3 1/2, so each roll gives 3 whole pieces
  5. 2 rolls: 3 + 3 = 6 pieces

Ans: 6 pieces
