A worked example

The line graph shows the height of a bean shoot at the end of each month from February to May. The y-axis has no numbers: each small square on the axis stands for 5 cm, as the key shows. The shoot stood 2, 3 and 8 small squares tall in February, March and May. Its average height over the four months was 25 cm. What was the shoot's height at the end of April?

  1. total for 4 months = 25 × 4 = 100
  2. one square = 5 cm, so the total is 100 ÷ 5 = 20 squares
  3. squares seen = 2 + 3 + 8 = 13
  4. April = 20 - 13 = 7 squares
  5. April's height = 7 × 5 = 35 cm

The answer is 35 cm.

Decide what each piece of data represents before dividing.

The bar graph shows the number of pets kept by each household in a block of flats. The bar for 2 pets has not been drawn. A quarter of the households in the block keep 2 pets. What is the average number of pets kept by each household?

  1. households drawn on the graph = 10 + 35 + 15 = 60
  2. the drawn households are 3 of the 4 equal parts, so 1 part = 60 ÷ 3 = 20
  3. households in the block = 60 + 20 = 80
  4. pets in the block = 10 × 0 + 35 × 1 + 20 × 2 + 15 × 3 = 120
  5. average = 120 ÷ 80 = 1.5 pets

Ans: 1.5 pets
