Find the average from the data
Decide what each piece of data represents before dividing.
The bar graph shows the number of pets kept by each household in a block of flats. The bar for 2 pets has not been drawn. A quarter of the households in the block keep 2 pets. What is the average number of pets kept by each household?
Show the animated solution
- households drawn on the graph = 10 + 35 + 15 = 60
- the drawn households are 3 of the 4 equal parts, so 1 part = 60 ÷ 3 = 20
- households in the block = 60 + 20 = 80
- pets in the block = 10 × 0 + 35 × 1 + 20 × 2 + 15 × 3 = 120
- average = 120 ÷ 80 = 1.5 pets
Ans: 1.5 pets
