A worked example

A strip of paper for a class banner measures 28 cm by 9 cm. A quarter of its length is folded over so that it lies flat on the rest of the strip. Find the area of the shape that can now be seen from above.

  1. length folded over = 1/4 × 28 = 7 cm
  2. area of the strip = 28 × 9 = 252 cm²
  3. area of the flap = 7 × 9 = 63 cm²
  4. area seen from above = 252 - 63 = 189 cm²

The answer is 189 cm².

Recover the original sheet's area

Use the visible folded shape to find the area of the rectangular sheet before folding.

A rectangular sheet of paper is folded once so that one end lies flat on top of the rest. The shape that can be seen after folding measures 22 cm by 6 cm, and the flap lying on top of it measures 5 cm by 6 cm. Find the area of the sheet before it was folded.
