A B C D is a trapezium with A B parallel to D C. P is a point on A D and N is a point on D C such that D P is equal to D N. Angle D A B is equal to one hundred and sixteen degrees. Find angle P N C. Try it first. Pause if you like. Read the marks before working anything out. The arrowheads say A B and D C are parallel. The two marks say D P and D N are the same length. And D N C is one straight line. Three parts, and each one names a different property. Only one of the three has a number on it. So the parallel sides go first. The two angles between the parallel sides are the one at A and the one at D, and they add up to one hundred and eighty degrees. So angle A D C is one hundred and eighty minus one hundred and sixteen, which is 64 degrees. D P and D N are the same length, so D P N is an isosceles triangle. The angle at D is that 64 degrees, and the other two share what is left. So angle D N P is one hundred and eighty minus 64, divided by 2, which is 58 degrees. D N C is a straight line, so the angles standing on it at N add up to one hundred and eighty degrees. So angle P N C is one hundred and eighty minus 58, which is one hundred and twenty two degrees. The first step is the parallel sides. The second is the equal sides. The third is the straight line. Each mark is one property, and we start from the angle that already has a number.
