A worked example

A girl is 3n years old now. Her cousin is 4 years older than she is. In 5 years' time the total of their two ages will be 56 years. How old is her cousin now?

Written out in full, the way it should appear on paper.

  1. the girl is 3n and her cousin is 3n + 4
  2. in 5 years' time the girl is 3n + 5 and her cousin is 3n + 9
  3. 3n + 5 + 3n + 9 = 6n + 14
  4. 6n + 14 = 56
  5. 6n = 42
  6. n = 7
  7. the girl now = 3 × 7 = 21
  8. her cousin now = 21 + 4 = 25

The answer is 25 years.
