A wire 100 cm long is bent to form a square of side (2s + 3) cm, and 16 cm of the wire is left over. Find the value s represents.

  1. wire used = 100 - 16 = 84
  2. 2s + 3 + 2s + 3 + 2s + 3 + 2s + 3 = 84
  3. 8s + 12 = 84
  4. 8s = 84 - 12
  5. 8s = 72
  6. s = 9

The answer is 9.

Find the outside perimeter

Find the outside perimeter and write your answer in terms of the letter.

A square of side 8 cm is joined to a rectangle measuring 8 cm by 3g cm, edge to edge along a whole 8 cm side, so that together they make one larger rectangle. Find the perimeter of the larger rectangle in terms of g.
