A worked example

Tin A holds h sweets. Tin B holds 8 more sweets than Tin A. Tin C holds 3 fewer sweets than Tin A. Only one of these three can be worked out exactly without being told what h is: the total number of sweets in the three tins, the number of sweets in Tin A, or how many more sweets Tin B holds than Tin C. Work out the one that can be found.

  1. Tin B is 8 above Tin A
  2. Tin C is 3 below Tin A
  3. from Tin C up to Tin B = 3 + 8 = 11
  4. B - C = 11 sweets, whatever h is
