The population of a town is 1 052 700. What is the value of the digit 5 in this number?
Value of the digit 5 = 5 × 10 000 = 50 000
Ans: 50 000
Example 1
In 3 070 300, the digit 3 appears twice. Find the difference between the value of the first 3 and the value of the second 3.
Difference = 3 000 000 − 300 = 2 999 700
Ans: 2 999 700
How to solve it
Read down the table, one row for each place, from the millions to the ones.
Split 1,052,700 into the values of its non-zero digits: 1,000,000 plus 50,000 plus 2000 plus 700.
Find the place of the 5 by counting out from the ones: ones, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands.
The value of a digit is the digit times its place: 5 times ten thousand is 50,000.
The same digit can be worth different amounts. In 3,070,300 the first 3 is worth 3,000,000 and the second is worth 300.
The same mark is in two places in this number. In the millions place it is three million. In the hundreds place it is three hundred. A digit's value is the digit and its place, together.

For parents
How do you answer P5 place value questions to 10 million?
This page teaches the Primary 5 outcome on reading and writing numbers up to 10 million in numerals and in words, using place value to say what each digit is worth.
What your child learns here
This page teaches the Primary 5 outcome on reading and writing numbers up to 10 million in numerals and in words, using place value to say what each digit is worth.
Group the digits in threes from the right: millions, thousands and ones.
Read each group of three as a number, then say the group's name.
A zero holds an empty place and must still be written in the numeral.
The value of a digit is the digit times the value of its place.
A number given as a sum of place values can be written back as a numeral.
Does the answer make sense?
A number from one million up to just below ten million has seven digits in figures, with zeros holding any empty places, so your child can count digits as a quick test. The value of a single digit is that digit followed by one zero for each place to its right.
How to practise these questions
Basic questions train reading and writing numbers up to 10 million, naming the place and value of a digit, and filling in zeros for the silent columns. Challenge questions add a place count larger than 9 that spills into the next column, zeros that must hold empty places in the middle of a number, and sums or comparisons of digit values. If the place values get muddled, watch the solution film for that question, then try it again later from Revision. The multiple-choice Basic questions ask for the value of one digit in a number up to 10 million, and the written working names its place before its value; they have no solution film.
Questions parents ask
How do you write 3 million and 40 thousand in numerals? Write 3 040 000. Group the digits in threes: 3 million, 040 thousand and 000 ones.
Is numbers to 10 million in the Primary 5 syllabus? Yes. The first Primary 5 Whole Numbers outcome is reading and writing numbers up to 10 million in numerals and in words.
What is the difference between a digit and its value? The digit is the figure written, such as 7. Its value depends on its place: in 2 750 000 the 7 is worth 700 000.
