You can find a duration on a timeline. Today we find times with breaks and clocks that are wrong. Kavin leaves at zero eight forty and rests for fifteen minutes. The estate clock shows ten zero five but is five minutes fast. How long was he riding? First fix the clock, then remove the rest. A fast clock is ahead of the real time. So the real time is five minutes earlier. Ten zero five minus five minutes is ten zero zero. Turn the minute hand back five minutes. Kavin came back at ten zero zero. The timeline starts at zero eight forty. The scale ends at ten ten. This last scale gap is ten minutes. First count from zero eight forty to the next hour. Sixty minus forty is twenty. Zero eight forty plus twenty minutes is zero nine zero zero. Mark zero nine zero zero before jumping. This first gap is twenty minutes. Jump twenty minutes to the next hour. Zero nine zero zero to ten zero zero is one hour. This hour gap is sixty minutes. Jump one hour to ten zero zero. Twenty plus sixty is eighty. The whole trip took eighty minutes. Kavin rested for fifteen minutes. Copy the riding parts into a new row. Join the riding parts, leaving out the rest. Eighty minus fifteen is sixty-five. The riding parts total sixty-five minutes. Sixty minutes make one hour, leaving five minutes. So Kavin rode for one hour five minutes.
A clock is eleven minutes slow. It shows fifteen forty-two. What is the actual time? Use the twenty-four hour clock. Try it first. Pause if you like. A slow clock is behind the real time. So add eleven minutes to find the actual time. Fifteen forty-two plus eleven minutes is fifteen fifty-three. Turn the minute hand forward eleven minutes. The scale starts at fifteen thirty. The middle tick is fifteen forty-five. The scale ends at sixteen zero zero. Each scale gap is fifteen minutes. Jump eleven minutes forward from that reading. The actual time is fifteen fifty-three.
A visitor leaves a gallery at zero eight sixteen. Walking to the pier takes seventeen minutes, waiting takes twelve minutes and a ferry ride takes twenty-eight minutes. At what time does the visitor leave the ferry? Use the twenty-four hour clock. Try it first. Pause if you like. We want a finishing time, so the wait stays in. Seventeen plus twelve plus twenty-eight is fifty-seven. The whole journey takes fifty-seven minutes. The timeline starts at zero eight sixteen. The scale ends at zero nine twenty. First count on to the next hour. Sixty minus sixteen is forty-four. Zero eight sixteen plus forty-four minutes is zero nine zero zero. Mark zero nine zero zero before jumping. The first gap is forty-four minutes. The last scale gap is twenty minutes. Jump forty-four minutes to the next hour. We have used forty-four of the fifty-seven minutes. Fifty-seven minus forty-four leaves thirteen. Zero nine zero zero plus thirteen minutes is zero nine thirteen. Jump thirteen more minutes from the hour tick. So the visitor leaves at zero nine thirteen. Duration includes breaks; activity time does not count breaks.
