You know how seconds, minutes and hours measure duration. We will read the twelve-hour and twenty-four-hour clocks. A reminder is set for one thirty-two p.m. How do we write it on the twenty-four-hour clock? This clock shows one thirty-two p.m. Both clocks write the same time two ways. Today's question goes here. Fill these four boxes. The hour hand is blue, the minute hand is purple, and the second hand is red. The twenty-four-hour clock counts hours from midnight. Wind back to twelve midnight. This counter counts hours after midnight. Twelve midnight. A new day starts here, with no hours passed. Write zero zero for hours, and zero zero for minutes. The hand turns to 1. One a.m. We always write the hour with two digits. Put a zero in front, and write zero one zero zero. The hand turns to 10. Ten a.m. Ten already has two digits, so we write ten zero zero. The hand turns to 12. Twelve noon. From midnight, the hand has gone one full round. One full round is twelve hours. So we write twelve zero zero. The hour hand starts a second round. It goes one more hour, to 1. One p.m. One p.m. is one full round and one more hour. Twelve plus one is thirteen. So we write thirteen zero zero. Back to today's question, one thirty-two p.m. The minute hand moves thirty-two minutes. The hour hand has not reached 2 yet. So the hour is still thirteen. The minutes stay the same, thirty-two. So the reminder is set for thirteen thirty-two. Check the part of the day. This works for every p.m. hour. The hour hand turns on to 11 at night. Eleven p.m. Eleven p.m. is one full round and eleven more hours. Twelve plus eleven is twenty-three. So we write twenty-three zero zero. From one p.m. to eleven p.m., add twelve to the hour.
Write twelve twenty-four p.m. using the twenty-four-hour clock. Try it first. Pause if you like. The purple minute hand shows twenty-four minutes past twelve. So it is twenty-four minutes past noon. The blue hour hand is just past 12. So the hand reads twelve. Do we add twelve? No. Add twelve only from one p.m. to eleven p.m. At noon, the hour stays twelve. Keep the minutes, twenty-four. Write four digits with a space, no colon, a.m. or p.m. The twenty-four-hour time is twelve twenty-four.
Write twelve eighteen a.m. using the twenty-four-hour clock. Try it first. Pause if you like. The purple minute hand shows eighteen minutes past twelve. So it is eighteen minutes past midnight. The blue hour hand is just past 12. So the hand reads twelve. But at midnight, a new day starts. No hours have passed yet. So the hour is zero zero. Keep the minutes, eighteen. Write four digits with a space, no colon, a.m. or p.m. The time is zero zero eighteen. Check the part of the day as well as the hands.
