Last lesson, you found the quotient and the remainder by division. Today, we will read the question to decide what the remainder means for the answer. A stall has 27 curry puffs. Each box holds at most 6 curry puffs. What is the least number of boxes needed to hold all the curry puffs? Here are 27 curry puffs, not yet packed. 27 divided by 6 is 4 remainder 3. 4 times 6 is 24, and 3 more makes 27. That makes 4 full boxes, with 3 curry puffs left over. All the curry puffs must have space in a box. These 3 curry puffs cannot be left outside. These 3 curry puffs fit in 1 more box, because a box holds up to 6. 4 full boxes and 1 more box. 4 plus 1 is 5. So the stall needs 5 boxes.

A stall has 38 fish balls. Each full bag must contain 8 fish balls. What is the greatest number of full bags it can make? Try it first. Pause if you like. Here are 38 fish balls, not yet packed. 38 divided by 8 is 4 remainder 6. 4 times 8 is 32, and 6 more makes 38. That makes 4 full bags, with 6 fish balls left over. The question asks for full bags. The 6 fish balls left over are fewer than 8. So the 6 fish balls cannot fill another bag. Only the 4 full bags count. So it can make 4 full bags.

A stall has 47 dumplings. It fills trays with 9 dumplings in each tray until it cannot fill another tray. How many dumplings are left? Try it first. Pause if you like. Here are 47 dumplings, not yet packed. 47 divided by 9 is 5 remainder 2. 5 times 9 is 45, and 2 more makes 47. That makes 5 full trays, with 2 dumplings left over. The question asks how many dumplings are left. The 2 dumplings left over are the remainder. So 2 dumplings are left. Read what the question asks for: full groups, the items left over, or enough boxes for every item. If every item must fit, the items left over need 1 more box.
