For parents

How do you choose a method for P3 word problems mixed practice questions?

This page mixes the question types from the whole Primary 3 More Word Problems chapter.

What your child learns here

This page mixes the question types from the whole Primary 3 More Word Problems chapter. Nothing on a question says which type it is, so your child practises reading a problem and choosing a method, which is the problem-solving focus of the MOE curriculum framework. The arithmetic stays within the P3 syllabus: addition and subtraction up to 4 digits, the multiplication tables, and division with remainder.

  • Read the whole question and name what it asks for before drawing anything.
  • Pick a picture to draw: two or three bars, before and after bars, a guess and check table, or rows of items.
  • Notice the clue words, such as 'at first', 'gives', 'altogether', 'instead' and 'free'.
  • Write each step on its own line and check the final answer against the question.
Does the answer make sense?

When a question gives one total shared among two or three clubs, classes or desks, your child can check that no single answer is larger than that total. In a story where a stall sells or a pail is poured out, the amount at first must be more than what left it.

How to practise these questions

This set mixes the chapter's question types, from two and three quantities to transfers, equal starts and working backwards. The Basic questions focus on comparison stories and guess and check. The Intermediate questions bring in changes before and after, and the Challenge questions add undoing steps and grouping by value. If a mixed word problem stalls, view its solution film and come back to it later from Revision.

Questions parents ask

How do I help my P3 child choose the right method for a word problem? Ask them to retell the story in one sentence before writing anything: who has what, and what changes. Then ask which subtopic it reminds them of. The method usually follows from naming the story.

Should my P3 child do mixed practice or one topic at a time? Learn each type on its own subtopic page first, where the method is taught step by step. Mixed practice comes after, because recognising the type is a separate skill that only mixed questions practise.

Which P3 syllabus skills do these word problems use? Addition and subtraction up to 4 digits, multiplying and dividing within the tables, division with remainder, and adding and subtracting money. The MOE curriculum framework puts problem solving at the centre of the curriculum, and these questions practise it.
