AOB and COD are straight lines crossing at the point O. Angle AOC is 4 times angle AOD. Find angle BOC.

Written out in full, the way it should appear on paper.

  1. ∠AOC + ∠AOD = 180° (angles on a straight line COD)
  2. ∠AOC is 4 times ∠AOD, so the two of them are 5 equal parts
  3. ∠AOD = 180° ÷ 5 = 36° (the 5 equal parts share the 180°)
  4. ∠BOC = ∠AOD = 36° (vertically opposite angles)

The answer is 36°.

Use the right angle and the straight line to find the missing angle.

XOY is a straight line. Ray OU stands on it with angle XOU a right angle, and angle UOV = 34°. Find angle VOY.
