Today's question

A hundred square is made up of 100 small squares of the same size. Thirty-seven of the squares are shaded. What percentage of the hundred square is shaded?

  1. 37 out of 100 is 37%.

Ans: 37%

Example 1

A car park has exactly 100 parking spaces. Fifteen of the spaces are occupied. What percentage of the spaces is empty?

  1. 85 out of 100 is 85% of the spaces.

Ans: 85%

How to solve it
  1. Check the whole first: 10 rows of 10 squares make 100 squares.
  2. Percent means out of a hundred, so 1 square out of 100 is 1 percent.
  3. Count the part: 3 shaded rows make 30, and 7 more make 37 squares.
  4. Write 37 out of 100 three ways: the fraction 37 over 100, the decimal 0.37, and 37 percent.
  5. In the car park, 15 of 100 spaces are taken. The question asks about the empty ones: 100 minus 15 is 85 percent.

The 15 spaces occupied by cars are 15 out of one hundred, so they are 15 percent of the car park. The 85 empty spaces are 85 over one hundred, zero point eight five, and 85 percent. Those are three spellings of one quantity, not three answers.

  1. shaded = 63 out of the 100 parts = 63%

For parents

How do you answer P5 percentage out of 100 questions?

The % sign means out of 100, and Primary 5 Percentage begins with wholes made of exactly 100 equal parts.

What your child learns here

The % sign means out of 100, and Primary 5 Percentage begins with wholes made of exactly 100 equal parts. Your child counts the parts asked for, writes the count over 100, and reads it as a decimal and as a percentage.

  • A hundred square has 10 rows of 10, so each small square is 1/100 of the whole, or 1%.
  • A count out of 100 is the percentage: 37 shaded squares out of 100 is 37%.
  • One amount can be written three ways, such as 37/100, 0.37 and 37%.
  • For the part not shaded or not used, subtract the count from 100 first.
  • It also works in reverse: 8% of a hundred square is 8 small squares.
Does the answer make sense?

The shaded part and the part not shaded must make 100% between them. In Question 1, 63% shaded and 37% not shaded come to exactly 100%. Read the answer back as squares as well: 37% of the hundred square is 37 small squares, and 63 plus 37 is 100.

How to practise these questions

Free Question 1 shades 63 of the 100 small squares in a hundred square and asks what percentage is not shaded. Basic questions train reading a count of shaded squares or empty parking spaces as a percentage, and turning a percentage back into a number of small squares. The Intermediate question asks how many more squares must be shaded to reach 60%. Challenge questions spread the shading over two hundred squares, or give the unshaded squares as 4 times the shaded ones. If a count out of 100 keeps slipping, open its worked solution and try the question again later from Revision.

Questions parents ask

What does the % sign mean? It means out of 100. 37% is 37 out of every 100, the same amount as the fraction 37/100 and the decimal 0.37.

Why does percentage start with 100 squares? With exactly 100 equal parts, the number of parts is the percentage, so no calculation hides what the % sign means. Wholes of other sizes come next in the chapter.

Is percentage first taught in Primary 5? Yes. Percentage first appears in the Primary 5 syllabus, starting with expressing a part of a whole as a percentage and the use of %.
