How do you solve P5 grouping method word problems?
Many whole-number word problems repeat the same group over and over: a pack, a tray or a set.
What your child learns here
Many whole-number word problems repeat the same group over and over: a pack, a tray or a set. This page applies the Primary 5 four operations of whole numbers to them: value one group, count the groups, then answer in the items asked.
Name the repeating group and list what is in it.
Find the value of one group, in money, length or count.
Divide the total by the value of one group to find the number of groups.
Multiply the number of groups by how many of the asked item each group holds.
When pieces are cut from rolls, count the whole pieces in one roll first, because offcuts cannot be joined.
Does the answer make sense?
When items come only in full packs, trays or sets, your child's count of items must be a whole number of those groups, so notebooks in packs of 4 must total a multiple of 4. A count that does not share evenly by the group size means a part-pack has crept in.
How to practise these questions
Basic questions train finding how many items a sum of money buys when they are sold in fixed packs or repeating sets. Intermediate questions add mixed packs, offcuts left over when pieces are cut, and one kind counted as a multiple of another. Challenge questions disguise the group behind a bonus, a gap or two related readings, so your child must decide what one group is worth first. If the grouping will not come clear, watch that question's solution film, then try it once more from Revision.
Questions parents ask
What is the grouping method in maths? It treats a repeating set of items as one group with one value. Dividing the total by that value gives the number of groups, and the count of items follows from that.
When should my child use the grouping method? Use it when the items in a question always come together in the same fixed numbers, such as packs, trays or sets. The lesson on this page shows how to spot the group.
Is the grouping method in the Primary 5 syllabus? The syllabus lists the four operations of whole numbers rather than named methods. Grouping is a way of using those operations in word problems.
