Each carton holds 2 and three eighths kilograms of flour. Mei Ling buys 6 such cartons. Find the total mass of flour she buys. Give your answer as a mixed number. Try it first. Pause if you like. Start with the flour in one carton. 2 whole kilograms. And three eighths of a kilogram more. Split every kilogram into 8 equal parts. The first kilogram has 8 parts. The second kilogram has another 8. And there are 3 more parts. Write the whole mixed number as 2 times 8 plus 3, all over 8. 2 times 8 plus 3 is 19. So the mass of one carton is 19 over 8 kilograms. Mei Ling buys 6 identical cartons, so multiply this whole mass by 6. 6 times 19 over 8 is 6 times 19, all over 8. Every part is still one eighth of a kilogram. The denominator stays 8. 6 times 19 is one hundred and fourteen. That gives one hundred and fourteen over 8. The question asks for a mixed number. One hundred and fourteen is 8 times 14, plus 2. So one hundred and fourteen over 8 is 14 and two eighths. Divide the numerator and denominator of two eighths by 2. Two eighths is one quarter. The total mass is 14 and one quarter kilograms. The mass in one carton is one number: 19 over 8. Multiply that one fraction by 6 for all six cartons. Write the total as a mixed number, then simplify its fraction.
