In Primary 2, you counted in hundreds up to one thousand. Here are ten discs of one hundred. Ten hundreds make one thousand. Today, we use a place-value chart to read and write numbers up to ten thousand. Mei shows 4 thousands, 6 tens and 8 ones with number discs. What number does she show? This is a place-value chart. From the left, the places are thousands, hundreds, tens and ones. In each place, we write one digit to show how many discs it has. Start with the thousands. There are 4 discs, so write 4. Now the hundreds. There are no discs here. Write 0 to show there are no hundreds. Now the tens. There are 6 discs, so write 6. Now the ones. There are 8 discs, so write 8. Read the digits from the left, and write them together. Mei shows four thousand and sixty-eight. The 4 is in the thousands place, so its value is four thousand.
Write seven thousand and twenty in numerals. Try it first. Pause if you like. Seven thousand is 7 thousands, so write 7. We hear no hundreds in seven thousand and twenty, so write 0. Twenty is 2 tens, so write 2. Twenty is just 2 tens, with no ones, so write 0. Write the digits together. So seven thousand and twenty is written seven, zero, two, zero.
Lin shows 5 thousands, 3 hundreds and 9 ones with number discs. Write her number in words. Try it first. Pause if you like. There are 5 discs in the thousands, so write 5. There are 3 discs in the hundreds, so write 3. There are no discs in the tens, so write 0. There are 9 discs in the ones, so write 9. Write the digits together. We say nothing for the 0 in the tens place. In words, it is five thousand, three hundred and nine. Each digit gets its value from its place, and a zero shows an empty place.
