Primary 3 Multiplication and Division study guide: the whole chapter, step by step
About this subtopic
This mixed practice stop brings together 3 topics from Primary 3 Multiplication and Division: Multiply by one digit, Divide with a remainder, Remainder in a problem. Nothing on the question says which topic it comes from, so choosing the method is part of the skill.
Practice questions with worked solutions
Question 1 is free to try. The other 11 open in the free trial, each with its solution film.

For parents
How should a child tackle P3 multiplication and division mixed practice questions?
This page mixes the three parts of the Primary 3 multiplication and division chapter: multiplying up to 3 digits by 1 digit, dividing with a quotient and remainder, and deciding what a remainder means in a word problem.
What your child learns here
This page mixes the three parts of the Primary 3 multiplication and division chapter: multiplying up to 3 digits by 1 digit, dividing with a quotient and remainder, and deciding what a remainder means in a word problem. The questions are shuffled, so your child decides each time whether to multiply or divide, and what form the answer must take.
- Multiply a number of up to 3 digits by a 1-digit number in columns, carrying into the next place, including across a 0.
- Divide a number of up to 3 digits by a 1-digit number and name the quotient and the remainder.
- Find the number that was divided from the quotient, the divisor and the remainder.
- Decide whether a word problem wants full groups, the leftover, or one more container.
- Tell an equal-groups story, which needs multiplication or division, from a joining story, which needs addition.
Does the answer make sense?
When the answer is leftover buttons or empty spaces on a row, your child can check it is smaller than one full set or row. When it is a product, it should be bigger than the number multiplied, so 609 times 4 lands a little above 2400.
How to practise these questions
This set mixes the chapter's question types: multiplying, dividing with a remainder and making sense of a remainder in a story. The Basic questions practise each on its own, and the Intermediate questions add regrouping and remainders. The Challenge questions ask your child to spot which operation the story needs and what its answer means. When a multiplication or division question in this set stalls, watch its solution film and try it again later from Revision.
Questions parents ask
What does P3 multiplication and division cover? The MOE Primary 3 syllabus covers the tables of 6, 7, 8 and 9, multiplying and dividing within the tables, division with remainder, the written methods up to 3 digits by 1 digit, and mental calculation within the tables. This chapter covers the written methods and division with remainder; the tables have their own chapter.
How can my child tell whether to multiply or divide in a word problem? If the story gives the number of groups and the size of each group and asks for the total, multiply. If it gives the total and asks for the number of groups or the size of each group, divide.
Is long division expected in P3? Yes. Division algorithms up to 3 digits by 1 digit are in the Primary 3 syllabus, and the lessons in this chapter use the long division layout.
