You can already solve a story in one step: add, subtract, multiply or divide. Some stories need two steps: find one answer first, then use it in the next step. A class has two hundred and forty-eight paper strips. It keeps 23 strips for labels and shares the rest equally among 5 teams. How many strips does each team receive? The class has two hundred and forty-eight paper strips. It keeps 23 strips for labels. Only the rest is shared, so we subtract first. Two hundred and forty-eight minus 23 is two hundred and twenty-five. So two hundred and twenty-five strips are shared. They are shared equally among 5 teams. Two hundred and twenty-five divided by 5 is 45. So each team receives 45 strips.
Kavin has 4 boxes of 18 crayons. He shares all the crayons equally among 6 friends. How many crayons does each friend get? Try it first. Pause if you like. There are 4 boxes, with 18 crayons in each box. First, we find all the crayons. 18 times 4 is 72. So there are 72 crayons altogether. Kavin shares the 72 crayons equally among 6 friends. 72 divided by 6 is 12. So each friend gets 12 crayons.
A teacher shares 72 stickers equally among 4 groups. Mei's group uses 5 of its stickers. How many stickers does Mei's group have left? Try it first. Pause if you like. The teacher has 72 stickers. She shares them equally among 4 groups. First, we find one group's stickers. 72 divided by 4 is 18. So Mei's group has 18 stickers. The group uses 5 of them. 18 minus 5 is 13. So Mei's group has 13 stickers left. Find one step at a time, and use its answer in the next step.
