Where should your child start with primary maths practice?

Start with one question your child has recently met in school, not the first page of a catalogue or its hardest topic. The useful question is: “Where does the explanation stop making sense?”

You do not need to settle your child’s overall maths ability before choosing a starting point. Try this suggested route for one question type.

1. Choose something familiar

Look at recent classwork together. Ask your child to pick a question they recognise but would like explained again. Check the topic and level before opening a lesson. A higher-level label is not a reason to move ahead.

2. Name the sticking point

“Ratio is difficult” can mean several different things. Your child might understand the calculation but not know which quantity stays unchanged. For before-and-after questions, choose the explanation that matches the change:

An amount moves between two quantities

Nothing enters or leaves overall. Look at what the two quantities add up to.

The total stays the same

The same amount is added to both, or removed from both

Look at the gap between the quantities before and after the equal change.

The difference stays the same

Only one quantity changes

Identify the unchanged quantity before comparing the ratios.

One quantity stays the same

If the difficulty is deciding what a fraction refers to, try Fraction of the remainder. It explains why the second fraction uses what is left, not the starting amount. These are choices for different needs, not a sequence everyone must complete.

3. Watch, then try without following the answer

Watch the chosen explanation together if needed. Pause and ask, “What does this part represent?” Let your child point, draw or explain in their own words.

Then use that lesson’s “Try one yourself” question. Keep paper nearby and let your child make a start before checking the working. Following a worked answer and choosing the steps independently are different things to observe.

4. Use what happened to choose the next step

If your child cannot explain what a quantity represents, return to that part of the explanation. If the method makes sense but an arithmetic step goes wrong, look at that step rather than restarting the whole topic. If the attempt is comfortable, choose another relevant question or stop there and revisit the method another day.

One answer is a starting observation, not a readiness score or a verdict on the topic. If the difficulty is still unclear, note the exact step and ask your child’s teacher or tutor about it.
